THINGS LAWYERS USUALLY DON'T TELL YOU

ABOUT ATTORNEY'S FEES

  • Paying a lot of money doesn’t ensure you will get a good lawyer. Paying very little usually ensures you will get a bad one. If the fee is low, it may be an indication that either the lawyer does not understand the complexity of OVI cases or he does not plan on working very hard on the case. See also: Who are the real best OVI lawyers?
  • A lawyer who doesn’t do much, can afford not to charge much.

  • If you outsmart your lawyer, you have the wrong lawyer.--Murphy's Law

  • If you can persuade your lawyer to charge a lower fee, see the rule immediately above.

  • Only lawyers who don’t know what they are doing think drunk driving cases are easy. Even bad lawyers know that clients want to hear they will get a great result for a low price. If a lawyer gives you this kind of answer, it may mean that either the lawyer is stupid or he thinks you are.

  • Lawyers who don't spend much becoming better lawyers don't have to charge as much.. For example, I have spent about $30,000 over the last ten years attending the National College For DUI Defense. Lawyers who don't spend this money or invest this time can charge less, but then they can't use the things learned at the college to help clients. Very few lawyers go to this trouble. If you want to see the few local lawyers that even are members, here is a link. I am also the only Columbus lawyer who has taught at the college.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS ABOUT ATTORNEY'S FEES

How much do you charge? Different amounts for different cases. Some lawyers charge the same fee to the person that pleads guilty on the first court date as they do to the person who has numerous court hearings, trials, and appeals. I try to only charge the client for the work that is done. That means I can’t give a price until I understand how hard the case is and how hard the client wants to fight. See also Flexible Fees.

How much do you charge for simple cases? Sometimes keeping the case simple is the best choice. Sometimes it is a major mistake. I do not charge the same for every case. Simple cases usually have lower fees. See the paragraph immediately above as to the exact amount. See also: I want to keep my case simple.

The choice between simple and good? People want their cases to be simple because they want them to be quick easy and cheap. The problem is they also want a good result. As with most things in life, quick, easy and cheap are usually, but not always, the opposite of good. You have to decide how important getting a good result is to you.
